Math Journeys 2011 – Day 1

We had a great first day of learning at Math Journeys 2011. Teachers focused on building a strong classroom community first thing in the morning. Then students created a tool called the “fat inch” that they will use throughout the summer. After a nice lunch and some exercise, students returned to class to participate in an engineering design challenge. Students were placed in groups and given note cards. Their task was to build the tallest structure they could in ten minutes using only the notecards. They had a brief period of time to discuss their plans and then they went about the task. Students worked extremely hard all day. The Math Journeys teachers were impressed by this work ethic and the amount of participation displayed by all students. We look forward to more great learning tomorrow. Check out the photos and videos below to see some of what we did today!

Wow, I truly enjoyed watching Mrs. Hayes set classroom norms. I loved how she connected with her students and made them feel safe. She gained instant rapport. What a great environment for learning!!!
